WELLINGTON TROTS

BIG CROWD AT TRENTHAM

Favoured by pleasant weather, there was a large attendance at-Trentham today for the Wellington Trotting Club's Spring Meeting. The fields were of good strength in the lesser classes, but smaller in the major events. The clash between Highland Fling, First Globe, and Globe Direct in the Wellington Stakes was, however, sufficient to attract enthusiasts to Trentham in the expectation of a keen battle for supremacy among the three-year-olds. Results:— NAI NAI HANDICAP. £275; 1_ miles. s—4—Rerewaka. scr (W. J. Doyle) . 1 7_6—Bel Esprit, 24 (D. G. Nyhan) 2 l—l_Toushay, 60 (L. F. Berkett); . 3

Two lengths; half length. Times: 3.26. 3.24 2-5, 3.23. (Winner trained by W. J. Doyle, Leeston.) ' Although Tolerate was the early leader in the Nai Nai Handicap, Rerewaka took over passing the stands, to stay there to the close, winning quite comfortably from Bel Esprit, who enjoyed'the run of the race, with Toushay getting up for third. Crossing the top, Rerewaka was showing the way to Valola. with Bel Esprit tucked in behind and having Suzerain on her.outer. Then at an interval came Toushay, who had made a fast beginning, with Aerial Scott at another interval. In the run to the post Bel Esprit came up to challenge but the leader was untroubled to win by two lengths, with Toushay half a length away. Suzerain was a fair fourth, with Valola and.Aerial Scott ahead of Tolerate. SHARPE HANDICAP, £275; 1 mile and 3 furlongs. 10—10—Larry Grattan, scr (R. Young) • ••• •• 1 13—11—Rawene Grattan, scr (D. Length; three-quarters of a length. Times, 3.6 1-5, 3.6 2-5, 3.6 3-5. (Winner trained by J. Young, Christchurch.) The start of the Sharpe Handicap was marred by Paratax breaking, interfering with several of the backmarkers. Nevertheless, there was a fund of merit in Larry Grattan's performance, for he broke about three furlongs from home, yet recovered to win. The favourite, Lucky Meg, took up the running from Indian Quest, Highland Pride, Professional, and Larry Grattan, the leader carrying on until Professional took over crossing the top, where Larry Grattan broke. Professional was still in charge on reaching the straight, but he was. then hotly challenged and Larry Grattan, finishing fast on the outer, got up to win by a length from Rawene Grattan, with Indian Quest also heading off Professional. Daphne Grattan, Lucky Meg, and Rangi's Star were next. • RAILWAY HANDICAP, £400; 2 miles. I—lr-Water Ranger, 48 (P. G. O'Reilly) 1 s—s—Diamond Trust, 24 (A. W. Broughton) 2 2—2—Noble Reta, 48 (D. A. There was little pace on in the early stages of the Railway Handicap, Certify taking the lead to stay there for the major portion of the journey from Fulwood, Diamond Trust, Noble Reta, - and Water Ranger,,_the v backmarkers ' being well up going away from home. With the pressure applied Fulwood commenced to feel the pinch and Diamond Trust moved up to be handy to Certify at the straight entrance, Water Ranger also looming up. The driver of the last-named drove a very confident race thereafter, drawing up' in the last half furlong to.win by three lengths from Diamond Trust, with Noble Reta a length and a half back and clear of Certify.
