HELP TO BRITISH PEOPLE
Surplus patriotic gift parcels are to be sent by the National Patriotic Fund Board to Britain for the British people. An offer to do this was made by the board recently and it has now been advised by Sir Patrick Duff, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, that the offer has been gratefully accepted and that the food parcels will be distributed free to hospitals, children's homes, and other charitable institutions. Mr. G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, said that approximately 40,000 parcels were available.
"You were good enough to communicate on behalf of the National Patriotic Fund Board an offer to forward as a free gift to the United Kingdom authorities the surplus of parcels of comforts which had been prepared for New Zealand troops overseas and which will no longer be required," said Sir Patrick Duff in a letter to the secretary of the board. "I have now received a telegram from London in which I am asked to convey to the National Patriotic Fund Board the warm appreciation of the authorities at Home for this most generous offer.
"The food parcels will be gratefully received for free distribution to hospitals, children's homes, and other charitable institutions. In communicating this decision to your board I should be grateful if you could let them know how deeply the people at Home appreciate this practical help to them at the present moment when the food situation in Britain is as difficult as it was at any stage during the war."
