RED CROSS GATHERING

THEIR EXCELLENCIES ATTEND

Held in connection with the annual meeting of the Red Cross Dominion Council, an entertainment to which the public were invited was given by the society in the Town Hall last night and was attended by the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall,

Men and women of the voluntary aid detachments arid presidents of Red Cross sub-centres in the Wellington district formed a guard of honour for their Excellencies, who were received by Mrs. T. H. Lowry, 0.8. E., D. St. J., vice-president, Mr. C. G. White, chairman of the Dominion executive, and Captain M.S. Galloway, Dominion secretary. Also among the official guests were the Mayor, Mr. Appleton, and Mrs. Appleton. The National Anthem was played by the Wellington Boys' Institute Senior Band when the official party had taken their places on the platform.

An impressive item was the presentation of a tableau symbolising the Red Cross. Entitled , "The Greatest Mother in the World," the tableau had been arranged by Mr. W. S. Wauchop and Mrs. M. H. Fougere, detachment commandant, and was. staged by Red Cross members, while Mrs. Craig MacKenzie recited Longfellow's "Santa Filamena" (The Lady with the Lamp).

A film of exceptional interest; which was shown in public for the first time in the Dominion, recorded, the work of the Red Cross for prisoners of war. Entitled "One Way Remains Open," the film had just arrived from International Red Cross Headquarters, Geneva. The second film screened, "Know Your Allies," had been lent by the American Legation.

The annual report of the Dominion council was read by the chairman. A musical programme was contributed to by Miss Mollie Atkinson, Miss Joan Bryant, and' Mr. Lex McDonald.

Their Excellencies, official guests, and conference delegates were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. White at supper, which was prepared and served by members of the Red Cross domestic unit, under the direction of' Mrs. Dickinson.
