TIMBER INDUSTRY
MAN-POWER RELIEF P.A. . NELSON, This Day. Addressing the Dominion Federated Sawmillers' Association, Mr. A. R. Entrican, Director of Forestry, said that tests had shown that the knotty nature of Pinus insignis timber made its use for studs impracticable, and when it was cut to 4in by 2in and 3in toy 2in the knots resulted in weaknesses, and the timber became distorted in drying. It would be necessary, he , said, to plan to increase the production of indigenous timber by 50,000,000 feet a year to meet post-war requirements. The Minister wished the industry to know that this year New Zealand would gain 20,000 men. by the reduction of the number of servicemen required overseas, and that would allay the fears of many sawmillers concerning shortage of man-power. The conference elected the following officers:—President, Mr. L. E. H. Baigent; honorary associate president, Mr. J. A. Bush; vice-president, Mr. A. Carter; executive, Messrs. C. S. Lovatt (Auckland and North Auckland), H. T. Smyth, K. O. Tunnicliffe (Rotorua Line and Bay of Plenty), A. E. McCracken (northern Main Trunk), D. J. A. Bush and A. Carter (central North Island), H.
