TYRE MAKING IN N.Z.
SURPRISE IN BRITAIN
(Special P.A. Correspondent.) Rec. 11 a.m. LONDON, July 25. The statement in the New Zealand Parliament to the effect that the British Government and the British tyre industry were consulted concerning their views in connection with the proposal to licence the manufacture of motor tyres in the Dominion has been received with surprise here.
A statement haa> been made by the representatives of the following companies: The Avon, India Rubber, John Bull Rubber, Henley Tyre and Rubber, North British Rubber, and Michelin Tyre. "We as manufacturers representative of the British tyre industry affirm that neither individually nor collectively have we been approached since the signing of the 1939 White Paper by anyone on behalf of the New Zealand Government concerning the British tyre industry's views on the subject of the proposal to manufacture tyres of motor vehicles in the Dominion. "Such an approach may have been made to some other manufacturer on a confidential basis, but we could have had no cognisance of this, and we categorically deny any knowledge of any consultation with British tyre interests as a whole."
In the House of Representatives on July 18. Mr. Nash said there had been applications from Britain, the United States, and New Zealand to manufacture tyres in New Zealand. , Mr. M. H. Or am asked: Has it been discussed with the manufacturers of Great Britain? Mr. Nash said Great Britain had been represented by one of its chief organisations. Britain had been consulted about everything that had happened. . .
