GREEK UNREST
PRECAUTIONS TAKEN
ALL PUBLIC GATHERINGS BANNED
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Rec. 10.20 a.m. LONDON, July 25.
The Greek Government has banned all public gatherings and ordered other measures to prevent disorders on the announcement of the results of the British General Election, report correspondents in Athens.
Right-wing elements are reported to be pleased and the Left Wing disappointed by the publication in the newspaper "Acropolis" of an interview with Mr. Ernest Bevin, who said that the British Cabinet was unanimously in favour of intervention in Greece after the incidents of December. 1944. Mr. Bevin is reported .to have expressed his personal opinion that the military government was ttecessary in Greece immediately after the liberation. f The Athens correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph agency, says that an attempt by M. Sofianopoulos to overthrow the Voulgaris Government by the resignation of the Foreign Ministry is regarded as having failed. The Foreign Affairs Committee is expected to demand an explanation of his actions. The Greek Government will investigate on the spot charges of maltreatment of Greeks interned in Africa and the Middle East. The Exchange Telegraph agency's diplomatic correspondent/ says official quarters in London admit that the charges are very grave, but says there are doubts of the responsibility of the Greek Left-wing Press agency which circulated them. There are 3000 to 4000 Greek army and navy personnel in camps in the Middle East, of which only a small proportion are convicted mutineers.
