HIT IN HARBOUR
Two Japanese Ships CARRIERS' BLOW AT KURE . . LONDON, July 24. ■A correspondent with the United States 3rd Fleet says that the carrier-planes which attacked Kure naval base hit at least two Japanese warships in harbour. Several other vessels were left burning. A correspondent of the "New York Times" says it is presumed that the target was the bulk of the remnants of the Japanese fleet, probably including- battleships and aircraft-carriers. The flak, was heavy. At midday, just as the lunchtime crowds were leaving* the factories at Osaka and Nagoya, more than 600 Super-Fortresses rained down nearly 4000 tons of bombs on targets in these areas, which are two of the most highly industrialised parts of Japan. The bombers flew without escort, and their exact number has not yet been given. Tokio radio estimates the total of fleet and landbased planes at 2000. Admiral Nimitz's announcement that destroyers are operating off Chekiang, eastern China is the first indication of United States warships being off the China coast. ' The destroyers sank several small craft and damaged others off Chekiang Province, China, yesterday, Admiral Nimitz said. Thunderbolts of the Strategic Air Force attacked airfields and •installations on Truk yesterday. Marine Corps aircraft attacked Yap, - the Palaus, and the Marshalls today.
