BREACH OF PROMISE
DAMAGES AWARDED O.C. PALMERSTON N., This Day. In the Supreme Court, a jury awarded Molly Hocking £150 damages for breach of promise. The defendant was James Roderick Mac Donald, farm labourer, of Opiki, aged 25, whose explanation, as given in the statement of defence, was that disputes a^d differences which, had arisen between them had caused him. in the interests of both, not to proceed with the marriage. The evidence disclosed that the only differences were' in relation to who should be invited to the wedding. They had been engaged for a year and had fixed the wedding for April 26, 1945. On the evening of April 4 they had parted affectionately, and next day she received a registered letter from him cancelling all thought of marriage and asking her kindly to recall the'wedding invitations and make humble apologies for the unfortunate position.
