LONDON DOCK STRIKE
GOVERNMENT INTERVENES Rec. 12.45 p.m. LONDON, July 23. The Government intervened tonight in the go-slow strike at the London docks, which has almost brought work to a standstill for two months.
At a mass meeting today the dockers rejected proposals relating to wages which were agreed on at a joint conference last Friday, whereupon the Ministry of Labour announced: "The Government has decided that ships carrying essential cargoes, particularly foodstuffs, for the London area, shall continue to use the port when necessary. Avoidable delays cannot be permitted and therefore all necessary steps will be taken to ensure expeditious handling." The nature of the proposed intervention has not been stated.
