ADVANCE TO COAST

CHUNGKING, July 22

The Japanese made their breakthrough 45 miles wide on China's invasion coast while striking south towards Swatow, states a Chinese communique. The Japanese, advanced from a point midway between Amoy and Swatow, crossed the border from Fukien Province into Kwangtung, and captured Chaoan, 20 miles north of Swatow. The drive is stated to have covered 103 miles in 22 days, and is aimed at building up a defence wall against possible Allied landings opposite Formosa.
