The diplomatic corps was re- .^. presented' by the American Minister;; '-. to New.Zealand, theConsuls-General: ; > of China and; Switzerland^; the; repre-;; v sentative in New Zealand of -the '■ ■ French Republic, and M. Van Hall,;: ; who represented the Consul of the ; Netherlands. The visitors included V~ Mesdames Patton and Wang Feng. ; >;? On behalf of the club, ;the president, v,f Dr. Athol Mackay, welcomed-the visi- : : tors and drew attention to the fact that ■■... July 14 was hot only a date; of importance to the" French; -but' also marked a milestone in the history of democratic institutions: M,.de-la Tribouille, president' d'hcnneur, of the club, gave an interesting and instruc-; tive address, choosing as/his subject "Les Origines de la Race Francaise." He traced the history of the ; French, nation from earliest times, the; effect ; France had had on other nations, arid the influence they had had on France. Miss Shirley Welch "contributed; two > piano solos, and the play,r "Cdmedie dv Bonheur," by Evreinpff, was presented by Mrs. P; Jeffries; The pianist was Madame Betts-Vincent.
