AWARDS PRESENTED

WELLINGTON COMPETITIONS

In the presence of a large audience in the Town Hall on Saturday night, his Excellency the Governor-General, who was accompanied by Lady Newall, presented awards to successful performers in the twenty-fifth annual festival of the Wellington Competitions Society. There -was not a vacant seat in the hall. In conjunction with thg presentation of awards, the society's demonstration concert of the cream of the items from the previous fortnight's programmes was held. A demonstration concert of winning items was also held in the afternoon. The atmosphere throughout was appreciative of the talent and skill of the successful performers, each of whom received a cordial reception. ■ The president of the Wellington Competitions Society, Mr. E R Myers, who presided, extended a brief welcome to his Excellency and Lady Newall, and the Mayor and Mrs. Appleton. Mr. Myers welcomed those visiting competitors who had secured a large share of the prizes. The society was glad to receive an interchange^of students from other centres Competitors, teachers, parents and many people too numerous to mention had contributed to the success of the festival. The president also welcomed members of the executive of the Hutt Valley Competitions Society who ertt prS? e£ • as A guests, in the'opinion of the Wellington Society, there was Hutt, and Wellington wished every success to the Hutt Valley Society in its efforts to foster and cultivate musical appreciation. . His Excellency expressed the thanks of the audience to Mr. Myers and all those ri the society who had organises the. wonderful display of talent that they had heard that night It was particularly gratifying that the ™lor. entries had increased by over 1000 since the 1941 festival.
