OBITUARY

CONSTABLE A. T. CLEVERLEY

One of the best-known and most popular police officers in New Zealand, Constable Alfred Thomas Cleverley; died yesterday in Wellington, in his fifty-ninth year, the result of heart trouble which had kept him in poor health for the past four months. His service of nearly 30 years in the Police Force was spent entirely in Wellington, and since 1928 he had been stationed m Tinakori Road. He joined the Force in December, 1916, and the following February was one of the constables appointed to the Wellington wharf police when that station was then organised. , An athlete and boxer in his early days, he passed on his athletic ability to his family, resulting in their becoming one of the best-known sporting families in New Zealand. Mr. Alt Cleverley represented the Dominion at the Amsterdam Olympic Games, Mr. Don Cleverley isa well-known representative cricketer, and Mr. Gordon Cleverley, prior to the war a constable stationed at New Plymouth,' was a representative Taranaki footballer. He is now a prisoner of war. The only daughter, Miss Vera Cleverley, was also well known as a tennis and basketball player. Mr. Cleverley's wife predeceased him some time ago.
