American Push

NEAR BELGIAN BORDER

.'„,..*_, LONDON, August 31. There is further sensational, news from each end of the fastmoving Allied line which now stretches across the entire area of northern Prance. < In the British sector the bridgehead across the Somme has been extended 13 miles beyond Amiens, and the First Canadian Army beyond Rouen, is 20 miles from Dieppe. The First American Army is less than 10 miles from the Belgian frontier.

American forces are already across ] the Meuse and are thrusting towards j Sedan, on the east bank of the river, j arid are approaching the forest of the Ardennes. •Sedan is five miles from the Bel gian frontier; and the forest crosses ■the border. It was at Sedan that German tanks first broke through into France in 1940. Correspondents say that the German . front in this area is completely broken and that the German retreat towards , Belgium has turned into a rout. The ' enemy is reported to be fleeing so fast , that the Americans have difficulty in maintaining contact. One correspondent says that Ameri- . cans are in the outskirts of Sedan, and that the Germans' only hope is to withdraw through Belgium.
