Rec. 9" a.m. MELBOURNE, Sept. 3. Victoria and South Australia now face a coal famine. Stocks for essential use have been at a very low level for several. weeks, it was stated in Melbourne.

Short shipments of New South Wales coal to Victoria may lead to an immediate drastic cut 'in Melbourne gas supplies, a curtailment of Victorian train- services, and a reduction in the output from essential war factories.
