TURF NOTES

AT WINGATUI

NOTES AND COMMENT

OTAGO HUNT FIXTURE

The only race meeting tomorrow is that of the Otago Hunt Club at Winga tui. The principal attraction is the Hunt Club Steeplechase, run over two and a half miles, and engaged in it are several horses that competed at the Grand National Meeting. At the top of the handicap is Valens, who, after failing in the Grand National Steeplechase on the opening day at Riccarton, returned to the lower grade to run third to Hanover and True Range in the Hunt Cup Steeples with 10.8. He will have an additional lib to carry tomorrow, and La Boca, who followed him home on the second day at Riccarton, comes in on 31b better terms. Donadea was guilty of running off at both his starts at Riccarton, although a riderless horse was partly responsible in the second instance. Nxght Scout failed at his last start, at Washdyke on July 24, and will have to improve, but Minton is a likely sort. The latter was going very nicely in the Hunt Cup Steeples at Riccarton when his rider elected to run up to Hanover at Cutts's, and the horse took off a trifle prematurely and fell. Of the others, Spanish Main and Feather Lassie must be accorded a chance, and the field, even though it is not of very good class, makes the position look very open. Despite the fact that the Tally-Ho Handicap, the open mile, has attracted only nine prospective runners, it includes some classy sorts. The double winner at the Grand National Meeting, Bashful Lady, is at the head of the handicap with 9.13. In the Winter Cup the Paper Money mare carried 9.6, and Boloyna now meets her ,on 171b betters, terms. The disparity is even greater when compared with their respective weights in the Islington Handicap on the second day at Riccarton. Macedoine will be having her first outing since running second to The Joker in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton in May, and may need the race. Hearth disappointed at the Grand National Meeting, but favoured with a firm track this Paladin mare might make amends. Dark Olga arid Paladeo both showed a lot of. speed at Riccarton, and the prospects of Minority and Fairy Bard must also be considered. It is certainly . a wonderful field for such a modest stake. The programme embraces two trotting events, and a good day's sp"ort awaits southern patrons. Horses that may be favoured are:— Seaview Hurdles.—Forte, Heidelberg, Knight Commander. Brockville. Down to contest the Tally-Ho Handicap, the open mile race at Wingatui tomorrow, is Macedoine, who proved herself to be one of the best staying of the southern three-year-olds last term. She was a winner of five races, her most important success being in the Wyndham Cup. She was runnerup to Royal Lancer in the Invercargill Cup, and filled the same placing behind The Joker in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton in May. This will be her first outing since.

Double Acceptor.—When in at the minimum, Lady Don brought off a minor surprise at Southland last Nov-1 ember by beating Spanish Lad and Winning Flight in the open- sprint The Roydon mare has not raced since failing in a hurdle race on the same track in January, but she figures in both the Seaview Hurdles and the Hunters' Flat at Wingatui tomorrow. Promising.—Since returning from Australia, Spanish Main has.... had a! couple of outings, and at her last?start, in the Spreydon Hurdles at the Grand National Meeting, she .finished a moderate fourth. This member of the Hazlett stable is to transfer to the 'chasing branch at Wingatui tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see how she shapes. No doubt she has had the necessary tuition in private. A Great Burst.—After being a trifle slow to move, Dark Olga dashed to the front in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton to open up a big break. At one stage, it looked as though the gap would not be bridged, but she stopped. Similar tactics in the big mile at Wingatui tomorrow might see her hold on long enough to win. Good Record.—Following upon a change of trainers, Sascha, a five-year-old mare by Salmagundi from the Aus-tralian-bred Royal Emblem, struck form to wind up" the old season with two wins, a second, and a fourth in her four starts. She appears to be a stayer in the making, and six furlongs may be too short for her at the Otago Hunt Meeting tomorrow. . y Stopped.—On the second day of the Grand National Meeting, Norse Was holding a commanding lead in the Spreydon Hack Hurdles;* but weakened badly over the last two furlongs. That outing may have worked an improvement and, further, the shorter distance at Wingatui tomorrow should assist him. He has still to score in this branch.

Refused.—After being hopelessly out of it in the Grand National Steeplechase on the opening day at Riccarton, Auctor had two outings on the second day. At his first essay he refused the fourth obstacle, and he ran off^at his later appearance. Back in October he won a hurdle race at Wingatui, but his record has been poor ever since. Nevertheless, he is quite a good-looking type, although a huge white blaze mars his facial beauty. Again Clash.—At the Washdyke Meeting on July 24, Glad Refrain narrowly beat Wildfire, with Invincible and Kilcato following the pair at an interval rof three lengths. The\ quartet are again due to meet in the-Hunters' Flat, and Invincible will meet the winner on 111b better terms, but the additional half-furlong may count against him.
