AMERICAN JEWS

VIEWS ON PALESTINE

Rec. 9 a.m.

LONDON, September 2,

The American Jewish conference passed a motion in favour of the reconstruction of Palestine as a Jewish commonwealth and the immediate withdrawal of the British White Paper of 1939, which placed the restrictions on Jewish immigration under the control of the Jewish Agency.

The "New York Times" reports that Zionist elements at the conference hailed the resolution with delight as placing Judaism on record for the first time in support of the Zionist programme.

Another zone, Wanganui, in the Wellington province has filled its patriotic quota for the current year. The Hon. Vincent Ward, honorary secretary of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council, returned yesterday afternoon from Wanganui, where he attended the finale of a Popular Girl Contest, the gross receipts from which were £9521 8s 9d. The contest was launched five weeks ago at a time when the Wanganui committee was faced with a deficit of £6000 in its quota of £18,500. Not only was the objective of the competition exceeded by more than 50 per cent., but the result also means that Wanganui has passed its quota. Other zones in the province have also reached their quotas.
