GERMAN GRIP COMPLETE
WARSHIPS' SECOND ESCAPE
LONDON, September 1. Germany's grip on Denmark is now complete. Refugees are still arriving in Sweden in small motor-boats and. fishing smacks, and even canoes. How many lives have been lost in the bid for freedom will never be known.
The Germans have rammed and bombed many ships. Eleven Danish warships made a daring "second escape" from the Germans through the narrow channel between Helsingborg and Malmo towards the Baltic Sea under the noses of patrolling German warships, planes, and shore batteries. They reached an unrevealed Swedish port tmdetected. The German news agency says that the big Danish coast defence ship Niels Juel, which was previously reported sunk by German bombs, has returned to its base after ,being ordered to do so by a German bomber, and also by the order of the Danish Admiral Wedel.
Swedish newspapers, quoting refugees, say that arre&ts of influential persons continue in Denmark, They . include Pastor Kajmunk, who has been an outspoken Nazi critic. The Stockholm "Afton Tidningen" states that the German Minister' to Denmark, Herr Best, resigned and left Copenhagen immediately. i NAZI "PREVENTIVE MEASURES.*' The German news agency put out a statement affirming that Germany, | after marching into the northern areas lin April, 1940, had been very lenient I with Denmark, but the Danish Govj ernment, though it was warned, proved incapable of ending the activities of enemy agents. The determined action of the German commanders smashed within a few hours the activities of British agents, who, with thqir associates and victims, had been rendered harmless. "All the other measures taken are purely of a preventive nature," the statement said.
At least one Copenhagen newspaper was published yesterday, after the interruption as a result of the journalists' resignations. Berlin radio quoted it as saying that the King's health was believed to be "satisfactory." One report from a German-controlled source says that the King, with a guard, has made a public appearance.
