A LIKELY NOVICE

FLYING SCOTT AT EPSOM

(By "Ariki Toa.")

The Te Rapa trainer M. Stewart is stated to be preparing a particularlypromising novice pacer in Flying Scott, and according to northern reports he is not likely to be long in losing his maiden status. He has done comparatively little racing to date, but is displaying fine speed on the track. He is due to make his next appearance in the Mangere Handicap at Epsom on Wednesday next, and as the class is not strong he should have bright prosj pects of success. Flying Scott is a ' particularly well-bred pacer, being a three-year-old by U. Scott from that grand trotter of a decade ago. Escapade, and it will be surprising if he does not turn out well with experience. I Long Overdue. The victory scored by Parrish Guide at the recent Forbury Park Meeting was well overdue for he had not figured as a winner since last November, and it was only his second success this season in 22 starts. A couple of years ago this trotter displayed fine promise and a high opinion was held of him, but he somewhat tarnished his reputation by failing to go steadily on several occasions. If he could only be induced to do his work correctly all the way in his races, he would win his share. Well-bred Pacer. Special Agent, who broke his maiden status at Washdyke last week, is one of the best-bred pacers in the Dominion, and it will be surprising if he does not make his way to the best classes. He is making steady improvement with racing experience, and whereas he formerly revealed a tendency to jeopardise his prospects by breaking at the start he can now be relied upon to pace solidly all the way. He is by Jack Potts from the unraced Emily de Oro, a daughter of Rey de Oro and Doraldina, who won among other races the New Zealand Sapling Stakes and New Zealand Derby. Doraldina also produced Daphne de Oro (Great Northern and New Zealand Derby) and Dusolina, the dam of Gold Chief. Sydney Derby Winner. Peak Hill, a three-year-old son of the record-holder Lawn Derby, registered his seventh on end recently when he won the Sydney Derby in the fast time of 3min 21 2-ssec, which is only a fraction over the present record held by Miss Lawnham. Among the horses beaten by Peak Hill was Bobby Linden, who had previously annexed both the Melbourne and Adelaide Derbies. Unique Record. Mollies Gauntlet, a trotter with ten wins to her credit in Victoria and New South Wales, has an interesting record. She has had two foals, both of whom have won at the pacing gait. She was sold subsequently to a horse dealer for £20, and after being worked in a gig was passed on at £17. Her new owner used her as a companion in barrier practice for a novice trotter, and as she failed to breed on she was put into work with excellent results.
