LOCAL BODY POLLS
THE MAYORALTY
FINAL FIGURES
The Returning Officer, Mr. J. Norrie, has announced the result of the official recount for the Wellington Mayoral election as follows: — Hislop, T. C. A 19,919 McKeen, R 10,978 Majority for Hislop 8,941 Informal votes 261 On the above figures Mr. Hislop gained 68 votes on the number announced after the election on Saturday night and Mr. McKeen gained 52 votes. The recount of votes in the City Council, Hospital Board, and Harbour Board elections is well ahead, and the results should be available before the end of next week. No changes of any moment are likely to be made in consequence of the declaration votes, for, as is shown by the recount for the Mayoralty, only a small proportion of these votes have been accepted by the Returning Officer.
The recount this year is not attended by either Citizens or Labour scrutineers, for it is recognised that the margins are so great that no one of the provisionally returned candidates is likely to be displaced. At Dunedin the recount of votes disclosed an error of one thousand in council votes; here the leads of successful over the highest unsuccessful candidates are about two thousand and over.
