PETROL FOR ROAD SERVICES

An economy of one-third of normal requirements of motor fuel had been obtained during the past year, states the annual report of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance. Chiefly this economy had been obtained from private and ancillary users, for licensed transport services generally were classed as essential and were not restricted in their supplies for the operation of services adequate for public requirements. "Commercial motor transport, as operated by licensed services, is not normally individually wasteful, consequently the percentage of economy which can be effected within the industry is less proportionately than in any other sections of goods transport," the report added. "The industry has nevertheless contributed substantially to petrol conservation, as it has been subjected to the most intensive investigation and review, and a recent extensive survey made throughout the industry in May has revealed that much had been accomplished, chiefly by co-operative methods, in the degree of co-ordination and elimination of waste necessary in existing circumstances."
