FOOD IN GERMANY
ENOUGH FOR A LONG TIME
AID OF RATIONING SYSTEM
LONDON, October 16.
Authoritative opinion in London is that Germany is a long way off a dangerous shortage of food. Her power to withstand the blockade for a long time is now being admitted.
Experts here declare that Germany started with the advantage that she entered the war with the whole of the vast and complicated apparatus for rationing in operation and with her population accustomed to queues, inconvenience, and grumbling.
Summed up, experts believe, that Germany is in no danger of a food shortage and that the Reich's complete system of rationing has been a great aid in conserving supplies and building up stocks. For the time being, while the people grumble, they do not protest. In the long run, however, the situation may be different. In an actual shortage of food, they cannot for ever be held at bay.
