PROBLEMS FOR CHURCH
EVILS OF THE HOUR
BISHOP'S ADDRESS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day,
Remarking that they met in momentous days, Bishop Simkin addressed his first Anglican Diocesan Synod today. They believed, he said, that right would prevail and that although the path to victory might involve sacrifice and suffering they should be enabled to tread it bravely. Their thoughts went out to the Church of the Old Land —the Church from which they had. sprung—and they offered their fellow churchmen and churchwomen their sincere sympathy and prayers in their trials and sufferings.
The position of the work of the Church among the Maori people of the diocese gave cause for serious concern, said Bishop Simkin.
"The prevalence of drunkenness, lack of control in moral conduct, and indifference to worship are three evils which demand the serious attention of the Synod," he continued. "The Church cannot stand aside, merely looking on, and doing nothing to stem the devastation of the spiritual lives of the Maori people. We must seek to find out where our weakness lies and apply the remedy."
