PRESENTATION TO FORMER SECRETARY

CROQUET CLUB OPENING

The Hutt Croquet Club was opened j on Saturday and was a very pleasant j function. There were many visitors j present from the city and suburbs.; The club's president. Mrs. R. V. King, welcomed the visitors, and-Mrs. Austin (president of the Wellington Croquet j Association) and Mr. M. Upton (bowl-: I ing president) also said a few words. I The opening ceremony of sending the first ball through the hoop was performed by Mrs. Austin. Mrs. Austin also presented a cheque, which had been subscribed by every croquet club in the Wellington district, to Mrs. E. McKenzie, who recently resigned from the office of secretary of the Wellington Croquet Association after twentyone years' service. Mrs. Austin said that Mrs. McKenzie was appointed secretary when the association was first formed and she eulogised her work during that long period. Mrs. McKenzie acknowledged the gift in a brief speech. TROPHY DONATED BY ! FOUNDERS. During afternoon tea, which was served in the large bowling pavilion beautifully decorated with flowers for the occasion, Mrs. McKenzie asked Mrs. Austin's acceptance of a handsome trophy which has been donated by the founders of the association and is to be the B grade inter-club trophy The trophy is a very handsome one, having a base of New Zealand wood, surmounted by the head of the mallet used by Miss Steele (world's champion lady croquet player) during her tour of New Zealand some years ago, and this in turn having a silver cup holding a blue croquet ball upon it. A large silver plate bears an inscription and the names of the founders of the Wellington Croquet Association, and the names of the winning clubs will be inscribed upon two silver bands surrounding the mallet head. Beautiful bouquets made by Mrs. Teagle were presented to Mrs. Austin, Mrs. King. Mrs. McKenzie, and Mrs. Upton.
