SOUTHERLY CHANGE LATER
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Moderate to strong north-westerly winds, but a change to moderate southerlies tomorrow
Weather fine and mild at first, but light rain developing with the southerly change and temperatures falling.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for a change to ! moderate south-westerlies extending northward as far as the central provinces within the next 'twenty-four hours.' Otherwise moderate to strong north-westerlies to westerlies will prevail. In the southern half of the South Island the weather will be unsettled at first with rain at times, but it will improve tomorrow from the south. Elsewhere it will be fair to fine, but scattered showers, will extend as far north as the Wellington and Taranaki Provinces with the south-westerly change. Temperatures will become cooler with the change, although otherwise moderate to mild, and there will be moderate frosts tonight in the far south. \
I During the last two days an anticyclone has remained almost stationary over the northern Tasman Sea and New Zealand, but this morning a shallow depression was advancing on to the South Island. Moderate southerly to south-westerly winds prevailed on Saturday from Cook Strait northward and north-westerlies yesterday, winds otherwise having been light to moderate and variable. Except for a few scattered showers in the Gisborne area and in the far north, the weather has been fair to ,fme and cold. This morning, however, there was cloud with intermittent rain in the far south, Puysegur Point reporting a fall of 98 points and Jackson's Bay one of 42 points. Other falls have been only light.
All four main centres had fair ti>. fine weather during the weekend, with occasional passing cloud and cool to moderate temperatures. Wellington had a moderate southerly on Saturday and a fres'n north-westerly yesterday. In the other cities winds were light to moderate and variable, with easterlies predominating in Christchurch and Dunedin. Wellington had 8.6 hours of bright sunshine on Saturday, with temperatures ranging between 53 2 and 39.7 degrees. Yesterday's bright sunshine totalled 10.2 hours and temperatures were higher, 58.4 degrees being the maximum and 47.9 degrees the minimum. ■■
