A SPECIAL OCCASION

SPINSTERS GIVE BIRTHDAY PARTY

SERVICE MEN AS GUESTS

Paper caps worn by men o£ the Navy, Army, and Air Force at the Spinsters' Club birthday party yesterday evening gave a slightly ludicrous air to neat service uniforms, but the occasion warranted gaiety and such liberties taken with the King's uniform would, in all likelihood, be condoned by the highest powers-that-be when the circumstances.. were taken into consideration. The party celebrated the club's foundation shortly after : the outbreak of war'and was attended by about 250 men as well as a full representation of the spinsters themselves.

It was a birthday party with all the trimmings. A frosted three-tiered cake, surmounted by real lily-of-the-valley, was ceremoniously sliced with a sword by the president, Mrs. Louis Hyams, and pieces distributed to each guest.

Ice cream and special party fare (which included such delicacies as cream 'cakes, savouries, stuffed eggs, etc.) were served for supper, and gay paper caps were woi-n by men and girls alike. Special birthday songs were composed and sung by spinsters Molly Shearer, Mary Mathias, Pat Inglis, and Billie Coutts-Moon. and the men replied with another original composition. Mrs. Charles McDonald was at the piano for a vociferous community sing and other items were given by Miss Olga Burton.

Miss Mildred .Harris lends her dance studio to the Spinsters' Club each Sunday for entertaining, purposes, and oh this occasion it was specially decorated with red, white, and blue streamers and a birthday greeting. Mrs. Hyams, Who, as Miss Patience Batten, was a member of the 1914 Spinsters' Club, was present with another of the original members, Miss Burton. Miss Burton, with Miss Barker, a fellow foundation member, made all the paper caps worn at the party.

Miss Lorna Acktoyd, chairman of

Lady Newall, ivifc of Air Chief Marshal Sir Cyril Newall, ivho is to succeed Lord Galway as Governor-General of New Zealand.

the club, and Miss Peggy Hyams, secretary, were assisted by girls of the club in making their first anniversary such a success.
