TOUR OF SHELTERS

ADMIRAL EVANS POPULAR

RUGBY, October 4. Admiral Evans ("Evans of the Broke") carried out another tour oi London's air raid shelters last night. The tour lasted several hours, and he was accompanied by Mr. Malcolm Mac Donald (Health Minister), Lord Horder (chairman of the committee which is advising the Government on the shelter question), and Mr. W. Mabane (Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Home Security). The tour included tube stations, including Holbom and Liverpool Street, and many types of public shelters in the City,. Finsbury, Holborn, and Bethnal Green. Admiral Evans and his party talked freely with the people, wardens, and shelter marshals. The Admiral was immediately recognised b., those in the shelters and was often cheered for several minutes. The visit ended at Finsbury Town Hall in the early hours of morning, while the anti-aircraft barrage was in full blast. Shrapnel was falling round the party as they drove away.

The War Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, yesterday made a tour of units of the Western Command, visiting an infantry training centre, a new battalion, and anti-aircraft and searchlight sites. He also watched brigade exercises.
