A GREAT PERFORMER
Nukumai, one of the most versatile and hardy horses ever raced in New Zealand, died on October 1, at the age of 23 years, in the paddock at Whenuakura, Patea, where he had been turned out for the last nine years, after having won his last race at the age of 14 years, at Christchurch. He was bred and owned by the Messrs Davidson and trained most of his career by A. M. Wright. He won 23 races and was placed 45 times in 143 starts for £10,857 10s in stakes. Nukumai won the Grand National Hurdles in 1928 with 11.11, but his most outstanding performance was registered at the Wellington Winter Meeting of 1927 when he won on each of the three days. On the first day he won the Whyte Handicap with 9.12, on the second the Parliamentary Handicap with 10.9, and on the final day was successful in the Winter Hurdles with 11.8.
