Major A. G. Livingstone arrived from Auckland this morning.
The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) will attend the annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber1 of Commerce on October 24.
The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) will return from Christchurch by Monday night's steamer express. During the day he will inspect the pipe-making plant on the irrigation works, and the departmental workshops at Temuka.
The Rt. Hon.- G.--W. M:P.j Cheviot, and Mr. S. G. Holland, M.P., Christchurch, were passengers from Wellington by the steamer express last night. '■.-■' ■ •.;.,:■ . Dr. J. C. Bradshaw was ■ presented with a number of books by the Canterbury University College Choral Society at its concert this week. Making the presentation, Dr. H. D. Broadhead paid a tribute to Dr. Bradshaw, wlio, as honorary conductor of the society, had, he said, done much to raise the quality of its work. Dr. C. E. Hercus, dean of the medical faculty of the University of Otago, and Professor F. N. Smirk left for the south last night after a short visit to Wellington. Mr. H. D. Acland, president of the New Zealand Sheepowners' Federation, who has been visiting Wellington, returned to Christchurch last night.. The Hon. Mr. Justice Northcrof t left Wellington for the south by last night's steamer express. , Mr. D. E. Wanklyn returned to Christchurch last night after a brief visit to Wellington. The Hons. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, J. Goodall, and G. R. Hunter, members of the Legislative Council, left Wellington for the south by last night's steamer'express.
Mr. W. M. Satterthwaite travelled south from Wellington by last night's steamer express. '
Mr. T. S. Coull, Dunedin, left Wellington for the south by the steamer express last night.
Mr. J. H. Cunningham, general manager of the Wairarapa Farmers' Cooperative Association, Ltd., Masterton, has been visiting Christchurch. . .
The Rev. Merlin Davies, who recently arrived from England, will next year take up the positions of assistant to the principal of College House, Canterbury University College, and chaplain to the Canterbury College Student Christian Movement; He will take the place of the Rev. S. E. Woods, who is retiring at the end of the year. Mr. Davies is teaching at Christ's College. . : . . :
Major Leckie, 6f Southland, who has been temporarily commanding a battalion, has been promoted temporary lieutenant-colonel, according to advice received from the official war correspondent with the 2nd Echelon in England. " •
