ENROLMENT PLANS

[START NEXT WEEK

THE E.P. SCHEME

Enrolment in the Home Guard and Emergency Precautions Scheme will commence on Monday. Depots as announced in the advertising columns of yesterday's "Post" will be open and volunteers may enrol in any depot irrespective of the area in which they. live.

A statement of the. purpose of the Home Guard and E.P.S. has been published in "The Post," but a few points have since been raised which require some explanation. Only those who attest may be posted to the Home Guard; those who make the declaration on form N.5.0.l will be posted to other/units according to their qualifications. Centres for training will be established at convenient places, thus avoiding unnecessary travelling. Volunteers should note that on proclamation by the Governor-General in any extreme crisis the Home Guard will pass under Army Control with pay and equipment as in the Army.

It ■is important to remember that members are required for the E.P.S. organisation, that, is, for works, fire brigade, transport, supply, communication, patrol, and medical units, and applicants for Home Guard should join the E.P.S. if their qualifications make them more suitable for such duties. Although on proclamation the Home Guard will be taken over by. the Army, the E.P.S. units will remain.under the control of the local body concerned.

The. scope of the training of the Home Guard will be the concern of the Dominion Commander and .his officers, but it can be definitely stated that training will take place during one or more evenings in the week and perhaps Saturday afternoons. Eifies will be made available for rifle practice, but will not be issued to individual members.

Every man above the age of 16 is urged to enrol or be prepared to make sacrifice in time and effort to ensure that the Home Guard: and E.P.S. units reach a state of high efficiency in order to carry out the work of; protection of women and children and homes.
