MILK DELIVERY
THE ZONING SCHEME
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
ASHBURTON, This Day.
When hundreds of consumers refused to take delivery of milk under the zoning scheme, which started on Tuesday morning, milkmen met and decided to return to the old rounds. The public resented being compulsorily zoned, and milkmen were turned away when they approached the homes of new customers.
Public rejection of the scheme was notified to Wellington, and an officer of the Department of Health came to Ashburton on Wednesday, met the milkmen, and was plainly told that the plan was all right on paper, but was unworkable in practice, and the public resented being dictated to. The officer is to make a report to the Government.
A public meeting of protest last evening decided to send telegrams to the Government, stating the town's disapproval of the system. The meeting also protested at the proposed legislation regarding the hours of shops and offices.
