NOT "COMMANDEERED"
TRENTHAM BUILDINGS
SEQUEL TO AN OFFER
It was reported on Friday that-the grandstand and kiosk at the Trentham racecourse had been "commandeered" by the military authorities and handed over to the Wellington Hospital Board , as a temporary hospital. Mr. E. L. Riddiford, president of the Racing Club, points out that the word "commandeer" is incorrectly applied to the transaction, whicfi was in no sense a commandeer. "Early in September," says Mr. Riddiford, "I offered to the authorities the use of all or any part of the buildings that could be of use for hospital or like purposes. Dr. Thorne visited the buildings with me then, and informed me that he did not anticipate that any would be required. "In view of tho offer made by me in September, the Racing Club resent the statement that the military authorities have found it necessary to 'commandeer' the buildings required."
