BIRTHDAY PARTY

BROOKLYN TOWNSWOMEN The Brooklyn branch of the Federation of Townswomen's Guilds held one of its.most successful meetings in the R.S.A. Hall, Cleveland Street, recently, when the branch celebrated its ' second birthday. Mrs. L. F. Smith presided. There was an attendance' of ever 170 members and friends, including representatives from Lower'Hutt, Karori. and Waiwhetu Townswomens* Guilds, also representatives from kindred women's organisations. The hall was decorated with spring flowers and birch. ' *• • A feature of the afternoon was an exhibition of arts and crafts, which included brass and pewter articles of all kinds,, raffia trays, macrame baskets, barbola work, and hand-made' jewellery. An excellent exhibit of handquilting in the form. of a rose-pink satin quilt attracted - a great deal of attention. An exhibition table containing exhibits of artistic floral worlc by the gardening circle was ' very ■much admired. The president extended special thanks to Mrs. H. Dunn, who iced and decorated the birthday cake in the. form of a large clock with the hands pointing at 2 o'clock. Before cutting the" cake, the president called • upon Mrs. Moxham, the guild's oldest foundation member, to light the .candles, Mrs. Moxham was accorded musical honours:. The entertainment side of the pro gramme was arranged by. the social secretary, Mrs. S. Hiliiker, and included part-singing by the guild glee club, elocutionary items by Mrs.. Geo. Castle, songs by Mrs. H. Dunn and Mrs. P. G. Hendra, and a sketch by the guild dramatic circle, those taking part being Mrs. S. Hiliiker, Mrs. N. Anderson, Mrs. E. D. Orr, and Mrs*. J. Crowe. , - Mrs. X. F. Smith and Mrs. F. B. Jameson were nominated by the guild, for the executive of ■ the Federation of Townswomen's Guilds. Mr. A. G_ Troughton was appointed honorary auditor. During the afternoon seven new members were enrolled..
