TURF NEWS IN BRIEF
Today's racing concluded the 1938-39 racing season. The new season opens with the Grand National Meeting on Tuesday week.
Without today's racing W. J. Broughton had a lead of 15 points over H. N. Wiggins on the jockeys' list. One win would have taken him to 80 points for the season.
Dubonnet, who won the Goodwood Cup on Thursday, is the first foal of the Buchan mare Chincona, and at Ascot recently he was second in the Churchill Stakes.
C.J.C. first-day acceptances are due next Thursday. A partnership in Globe Trotter has been registered by Messrs. M. D. Bonthorne, G. A. Lang, and A. Pope. The partnership colours will be light green and gold chequers, gold sleeves and cap.
Rabble has been taken over by his trainer, C. C. McCarthy, on lease from Mr. D. W. Spencer. Begorrah has been nominated for minor hurdle events at Riccarton, and there is every likelihood of the gelding's making the trip. He is now owned by Mr. A. W. Meikle, who races Charade.
Konetta, who registered some very smart performances as a two-year-old in Auckland earlier in the season, will have her first races in the south when she contests sprint events at Riccarton. She looks certain to develop into a first-class sprinter. Bridegroom is an interesting entrant for the Hunt Club Cup on the second day of the Grand National Meeting. He is easily the most promising of the younger cross-country horses seen out this winter. With three victories to his credit in his last three starts he is sure to be allotted a solid weight. The New Plymouth trainer H Dulieu has definitely decided to take Chat, Glenvane. and Kaiwaka to Riccarton. Although Kaiwaka won at Manon he is still eligible for the Cashmere Plate, as the special conditions of the race state for maiden horses at time of entry, and Kaiwaka was entered the night before opening his winning account last week. . Under the conditions of the Christchurch Hunt Club's programme winners of the three principal events today will not incur any penalty for corresponding races at the drand JNational Meeting, and the winner of the Maiden Stakes will still be eligible to start in the Cashmere Plate, which us for horses that have not won a race at time of nomination.
