INQUISITOR SCHOOLING
(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, July 28. Royal Appellant, ihe suiprise winner of the Cornwall Handicap, is in good' order, and his next race will be in the main handicap event at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting on August 19. This fixture, only three weeks off now, will commence the new season in the Auckland district. One of the most forward of the I early two-year-olds is likely to be the Takanini-lrained Merrymeer, who I was being indulged in short sprints before the bad weather set in several ! weeks ago. She is a brown filly by I Vermeer from Merry Way, the latter being a modest performer in the Taranaki district a few seasons ago. Merrymeer is her first living foal, and as the sire of the filly is a son of Solario much interest will be taken in her debut. Merrymeer is being trained by A. Tinker, and another rising two-year-old in his stable that is of interest is Tavern Gay, who is a half-brother to Tavern Knight, a speedy horse that met an early end after continuing his j winning run in Australia. Present j prospects are that Tavern Gay will i not be very far behind his relative when it. comes to showing speed. A brilliant youngster this season who seemed to fall just short of being top class was Orelio. The colt is doing well again at Takanini, and if he has made the necessary progress he may be a thorn in the side of the visiting three-year-olds for the early northern classics. He cost Mr. T. Impey 1000 guineas as a yearling, and since then he has won once and in sjx otner starts failed to get a place "only on one occasion. His brother Agrion was a first-class three-year-old and is doing i well as a sire in Western Australia. A useful sort of hurdler- in ivia Acrea was off the scene during the winter meetings for the very good j reason that he is not partial to heavy going. However, he is a good prospect for spring events over the battens, especially if the tracks make a good recovery. Inquisitor proved by his eliorts against the hacks in the Auckland district that he is a most capable galloper and fine stayer, and he appeal's to be the right sort for a jumper. In this connection it is interesting to note that he is one of those qualifying for hunters' events at coming meetings confined to that class.
