RETIREMENT
DISTINGUISHED EX-SOLDIER
" Mr. J. R. Cade, draughtsman in charge at the Public Works office, Wanganui, and secretary of the No. 8 Highways District, retires at the end of next month, oh superannuation, after 42 years' service. Mr. Cade joined the Lands and SurVey Department in 1897, when some hundreds of men were employed yin the Pahiatua-Makuri-Pongaroa area on development work. When the State formed .a Roads Department, Mr. Cade was absorbed in the new administration and in 1901 he was transferred to Wanganui.
'; Mr.. Cade served in Belgium and France,: and was with the Army of Occupation" in the Rhine. He rose to the rank of Major, and was mentioned in dispatches by Sir Douglas Haig, and awarded the Military Cross for service in the field/ On his return Mr. Cade joined the Wellington West Coast Regiment and rose to the rank of Lieut.Colonel. He was awarded the Colonial" Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration. Mr. Cade will continue to live in Wanganui/
