DUNEDIN, This Day,

Sunshine today has commenced a thaw. The main streets are cleared, enabling trams to run on the mam tines. The only eeress north is still Vocked at Mount CareiH, anc 1 after a survey the Transport Board advised that the main north road would be unavailable for traffic over the weekend.

The biggest snowstorm in years occurred in Central Otago last night, and all roads are now blocked.

During the night a big glass fernery at the Dunedin Botanic Gardens collapsed under the snow, being completely ruined.

It is hoped to get an airliner away this afternoon, but thei'e will be no south-bound planes for some days owing to the condition of the Taieri airport.

AH Otago and Southland coalmines are closed, and coal is being delivered in single baes. There is also some rationing of milk.

The morning express got away to Invercargill, but the through train from InvercargilV was cancelled owing to heavy snowdrifts between Port Chalmers and Mihiwaka nrecludin** the use of the north line. There will be a normal service on the south line from this afternoon. The suburban train schedule has been restored, and waterfront work has resumed after slrr>s' hoses ha^ cleared the wharves.

The stesmer Storm is to take mails north to Oamaru. whence they will be transferred to a train.
