PETITION TO GOVERNMENT

The attention of citizens is called to an advertisement in this issue inviting ratepayers and citizens to sign a petition addressed to the Government asking that the burden of hospital rates be borne by the whole community rather than, as now, by those who happen to own their own home or other property, It is contended by those who have prepared the petition that the Government, in effect, controls the public hospitals and that the ratepayers who find more tha** half the cost of administration have little say in the control or what shall be levied in rates upon municipalities and other local bodies,' It is considered that the present system is uneconomic and is one which exacts from many more than they ca!n reasonably afford. It the prayer of the petitioners is given effect to the cost of administering aU public hospitals will be spread over the whole community through the agency of the State
