15-TON U.S. BOMBER
FLIGHT TO ENGLAND
TASK FOR GUBA'S CREW
(Received July 3, 11 ajn.)
NEW YORK, July 2.
The flying-boat Guba (which recently explored an Indian Ocean route for Imperial Airways) arrived from the Virgin Islands today. Dr. Archbold and his crew are proceeding to San Diego to fly a 15-ton Consolidated patrol bomber to Felixstowe. The British Ministry secretly ordered this machine, which is the largest contracted for outside the Empire.
If the bomber has a range of 4000 miles and passes rigorous Royal Air Force tests a large order will be placed in the United States, or, as in the case of the Soviet, will be produced in England under licence.
A spectacular two-day delivery flight is planned. The machine will vault the continent from San Diego to Botwood (Newfoundland) —a distance of 3300 miles —and, after refuelling, will fly the Atlantic. The Guba's crew were selected because of their experience in handling huge seaplanes.
