PLUNKET SOCIETY

UPPER HUTT WORK

The annual meeting of- the Upper Hutt branch of :the : Plunket Society was held in the Plunket rooms, and •was presided over by the Mayor of Upper Hutt (Mr. J. Blewman). It was stated that the branch, was in need of more assistance from interested parents. By their: becoming subscribers, andthus assisting the funds; the committee would be relieved of much anxiety regarding the working of the branch. The retiring, president, Mrs. S. Blackley; was. thanked for her assistance to the* branch, and Mrs. S. D. Rogers was elected president. Both were presented with floral tributes. An interesting address, given by Dr. Martin Tweed on his recent trip abroad, concerned various hospitals and institutions visited, and the work among children. Special reference was made to the death of the late Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson), who had been chairman of the advisory board, also to the passing of Sir Thomas-Wilford, members standing in silence as a mark of re-j spect. . The following members were elected to the executive:—Patroness, Mrs. Balcombe Brown; president, Mrs. S. D. Rogers; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Blewman- (Mayoress), J. Blackley, E. Campbell,.A. J. O. Duff; honorary treasurer, Mrs. W. Thomas; honorary secretary, Mrs. J. D. Watt. EXTENSION OF WORK. It was stated in the annual report that, in response to a request from headquarters asking the branch if it could undertake the Plunket work in Stokes Valley, it was decided, after conferring with the nurse, to make arrangements for a fortnightly visit. This had accordingly been carried out, the mothers of the valley having raised funds to purchase the necessary scales and the Hutt County Council having granted the free use of the hall. The attention of mothers was drawn to the fact that they should keep in touch with the nurse until their children reach school age. This did not seem to be generally known, and it was to the advantage of the children if the fact that these services were available was more fully recognised. THANKS TO HELPERS. The thanks of the committee were extended to the ladies who during the year motored the nurse to the outlying district; without their help much of this work could not have been undertaken. Thanks were also extended to all those who assisted in various ways in the different efforts that have from time to time been made on behalf of the Plunket work in general; to the Army officer for use of the hall at Trentham; managers of Presbyterian Church, Silverstream, for use of guild room; to the Hutt County Council for hall, Stokes Valley; to the ladies who entertained the nurse weekly at Trentham; to Mr. J. O. Duff, the auditor; and to the Press for continued publicity. Equal quantities of fuller's earth and lump magnesia mixed with hot water and applied hot will remove | grease spots from carpets. When dry, brush well. , j
