MEXICO CITY MATCH

TWO Wlltfs TO AUSTRALIA

QUIST'S HEALTH

(By Telegraph—Press Association—CopyHglit.l (Received July 1, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 30. Results of the first day's play in the Davis Cup tennis match between Australia and Mexico, at Mexico City, are:-— J. BFornwich (Australia) beat D. Hernandez (Mexico), 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. A. Quist (Australia) beat R. Tapia (Mexico), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Quist's physical condition was apparently a matter of some concern, and there was doubt in the morning as to whether he would play. ThereJ was a drizzle early in the morning, but the courts dried out, making play! possible. * Hernandez was simply unable $o provide any sort of tennis of sufficient calibre to occupy Bromwich long during the first two'sets. He rallied in the third set, and pien fought hard in four games, which, however, he lost after protracted deuces. He stood 40-0 in the Second game, but was unable to clinch the necessary point. He was a tired; man when the match finished. ■'.'■* ... j Quist's condition was plainly reflected in his playing. Tapia won the first game to love, but Quist's superior ability in all branches of tennis was j quickly shown when he ran off with i the remaining games of the set, winning the last two to love. The second' set found Quist's physical weakness showing itself clearly. He was unable to go after Tapia'^ shots which, J moreover, were coming, off perfectly.; The Australian was tired but rallied towards the end of the set, and then appeared to be determined to finish the match as quickly as possible. Continually storming the net and keeping his opponent at the back of the court, he smashed the majority of the latter's defensive returns. i i
