HUTT VALLEY NEWS

PARTY FOR CHILDREN

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

The members of the Waiwhetu subbranch of the Plunket Society were hostesses on Saturday afternoon at a delightful "holiday party" held in Birch Street hall and attended by nearly a hundred children. The varied programme of entertainments, which was arranged by Mrs. Edmund White, and carried out with the assistance of Mrs. S. G. Mclntosh, Miss Susie Sanders and Mr. Jack Clarke, included a parade of fancy costumes, games both old and new, dances and —high lights of the afternoon—a Continental puppet show "Punch on the Road of Dangers" produced by Mrs. O. S. Heymann with Mrs. H. S. Levy as assistant.

The fancy dresses were judged by Mrs. A. Dennis and Mrs. A. Hardcastle, who chose the winners in the various age-groups as follows: —4 years and under, girls, Robin Woolley (Alice Blue Gown); boys, Phillip Levy (Red Indian). 5-7 years, girls, Valeric Railton (cracker); boys, Barry Russell (Mephistopheles). 8-9 . years, girls, Judith Perigo (gipsy); boys, Graham Davies (the baker). 10 and over, Berice Sargent (crinoline). Most original costume, Glenis Williams ("No Plunket in My Day").

Accompaniments and incidental music were played by Mrs. E. White and Mr. J. Clarke. A tempting stall of home-made sweets in the charge of Mesdames A. J. Sanders and A. G. Williams, was an additional attraction for the small people whose appetites, however, seemed not in the least affected when they settled down, picnic fashion, in a big circle to enjoy their tea. Afternoon tea for the parents was also provided by the committee which comprised Mesdames S. G. Mclntosh, F. F. Macindoe, R. Beaumont, A. G. Williams, A. J. Sanders, E. White, J. Smith, H. S. C. Burns and V. Vinsen) and held in the social hall of the Working Men's Club at Petone. Games and competitions of all descriptions and "fines and forfeits" kept the pennies rolling in and an amusing auction sale of articles donated by the committees added still more to the funds. Supper was served by members of the committee.
