TRANSPORT BOARD

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN

AUCKLAND, This Day,

■ When his name was dfawn from a I hat today Mr. W. H. Nagle became chairman of the Auckland Transport Board. It was the first meeting after the declaration of the official count. The secretary, Mr. C. R. Gribble, presided. The board consists of five members who were Citizens' Association candidates, and five Labour candidates. The election of a chairman was regarded as of paramount importance because he has a casting vote. j

When the meeting was due to commence the only members present were the five Citizens' Association representatives, although five is a quorum. The opportunity was not taken td steal a march. When Mr. Gribble called the meeting to order Mr. Allum moved an adjournment until the remainder of the members appeared. Five minutes later the full board assembled. Mr. W. H. Nagle was nominated by the Citizens' representatives and Mr. J. Sayegh was nominated by the Labour members, each candidate securing five votes. In accordance with the Act the names were placed in a hat. Mr. Gribble then drew one and declared Mr. Nagle elected. The first to offer congratulations was Mr. Sayegh.
