WHY CENTRALISE?
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—lt is most interesting to read in your columns of the difficulties that confront manufacturers. It would appear from the statements that are made that the main difficulties are lack of labour and of accommodation in Wellington. This is admitted to be correct but why do the manufacturers keep to Wellington and the Hutt Valley? What about the provincial towns? Levin, which will be brought to within just over one hour's journey to the main port on completion of the coastal roads, offers great opportunities to manufacturers. The writer knows of between forty and fifty girls who are waiting to commence ,york as soon as such an opportunity occurs. These girls will live at +><eir homes, hence the accommodation problem i' solved. There are buildings already erected and fitted up with all conveniences, which I have no doubt can be secured at a very low rental. It may be argued that the cost of transport is too high but the very great difference in the rents charged will more than make up for transport charges by a long way. In the meantime, owing to the shortage of and high, cost of accommodation in the cities, the youths and girls in the provincial towns must remain, unemployed. What New Zealand makes makes New Zealand, not what the cities make.—l am, etc.,
