STRONGER DEFENCES
AMERICAN CONTINENT
SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, January 3.
The Navy Department submitted to Congress a special report recommending the strengthening of the Continental defences by establishing new air bases and strengthening the existing naval bases. *
Particular reference is made to extending the Pacific line of defence as far west as Guam Island, with strategic defence developments at Hawaii, Midway, Wake, Guam, and .other islands.
Developments are also recommended for Johnson, Palmyra, Canton, and Hose Islands, thus strengthening the lines- of communications and defence of the United States in the south Pacific as well as in the west Pacific.
