WELL-CONTROLLED RACING
A feature of the Wairarapa Racing Club's recent meeting was the splendid control exercised during the two days. The stewards and their assistants are worthy of the highest pliment for the'manner in which the meeting was conducted. •. ; ■ ' The acting stipendiary steward, was a South Islander who is new to these parts, Mr, A. S.. Jones, of, Timaru. Mr. Jones has had considerable experience in this role in the South Island,.and his attention to all details at Tauherenikau and the refreshing smartness with which he carried out his official duties met with very general approval. Mr. Jones is better known as an owner1 of horses with a special desire some day to win the Grand National Steeplechase. Two horses he has raced Ip. the big cross-country event in recent years are Valves and High Speed, full-brothers whom he bred himself,: and he believes he was unlucky not to win the race with the unsound High Speed, who ran third to Royal Limond and Billy Boy two seasons ago Now he has another horse for coming Grand Nationals, and this is the five-year-old Chanteur, a halfbrother by Robespierre to Song. Bird whom he purchased some time back from Messrs. J. W. and L. Wt Stprry, and of whom he has a high opinion as a future jumping proposition.
