RACING WRITER'S WINNER
I Sporting journalists have often been successful owners of racehorses in other parts of the world, but in the recent history of the Turf in the Dominion such a being is quite unique. The congratulations of the fraternity will therefore be extended the wellknown Greymouth sporting notary, Mr. J. A. Mclnroe, who owns The Masquerader, winner of the Westland Handicap at Hokitika last week.
The Masquerader, who was successful in the C.J.C. Great Easter several years ago but shortly afterwards went amiss, was purchased by Mr. Mclnroe as an initial flutter in the role of ownership following a poor showing at the New Zealand Cup Meeting tn November. First up in his new colours, the Limond gelding led the field the whole way at Hokitika and thus paid tribute to Mr Mclnroe's discrimination in his purchase, and to the training of J. Walsh, the Omoto horseman. Needless to say the winning owner was the recipient of congratulations on. all sides. Mr. Mclnroe's colours, by the way, are vieux rose, old gold sleeves, emerald green sash, old gold cap. So they were apparently not settled without a deal of fitting reflection.
It is interesting to note that such a victory could not be allowed to. go unchallenged. After the race, M. Conza, the trainer of Roy Bun/ who is owned by Mr. T.- E. Coates, the president of the Greymouth Jockey Club, protested against The Masquerader on the grounds of alleged interference about 100 yards from the post, but the Westland committee unanimously decided to, dismiss the protest.
