FIJIAN HONOURS

SUVA, January 2. The New Year honours list is as follows:— K.C.M.G. The' Governor of Fiji, Sir Harry Luke. C.B.E. Bishop Nicolas, Roman Catholic Bishop of Fiji. M.B.E. Mr. H. E. Maude, administrative officer, Gilbert Islands. Sir Harry Luke was born in 1884 and educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Oxford. He became private secretary and A.D.C. to the Governor of Sierra Leone in 1908, and three years later served the Governor of Barbados in the same capacity. In 1911 he was attached to the Colonial Office and continued his secretarial work in Cyprus. He served in the war, being an Acting Commander in the R.N.V.R... and was attached to the staffs of Admirals Wemyss and Christian at the Dardanelles. Later he was Government Secretary at Mudros. In 1919-20 he was political officer to Sir John Robeck at Constantinople and in the Black Sea, and for a time was British Commissioner in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. In 1920-24 "he was Assistant-Governor of Jerusalem, and in 1924-28 Colonial Secretary in Sierra Leone. In 1928----30 he was Chief Secretary to the Palestine Government, and in 1930 wns appointed Lieutehant-Governor of Malta. He became Governor of Fiji last June. He was knighted in 1933.
