JEANNE'S TREBLE

TWO DOUBLE SUCCESSES

Form was a false guide for the early events on the concluding day at Tauherenikau yesterday, but later this line worked out better and gave some encouragement to the large holiday attendance which took, advantage of what was probably the best day for many months. Some of the fields were of moderate class; but the racing was again interesting, and the starting was much better than ou the opening day. The Trentham trainer T. R. George came back into his own on one of his favourite courses, Dungarvan, Hinerawe, and Dorak securing winning honours for their stable. Jeanne showed fine form at the meeting by scoring three successes in as many starts, and Hinerawe and Export were both double winners. AN OVERDUE SUCCESS. Mother-in-Law has been working well enough for several weeks past to win a race, and she had her turn at last in the Tawana tiack Handicap, in whicn she aasned to the front at the end of a furlong and was never caught. She was well nandled by the apprentice F. Power, who was also well due for his first success in the saddle. Earl Colossus was second most of the way, and Drachma was again finishing on third after being forced over a lot of ground. The best of the others were Lady Lyric and Floral Robe. The favourite, Gold Ballad, was disappointing, aiid Le Toquet also failed to run up to expectation after making hard work of the turns. ALL THREE PLACINGS. The three placings in the Pirinoa Stakes were occupied by T. R. George's trio, Dorak, Daregain, and 3atsham in that order. DoraK was first out, and though headed by Daregain after hangling out in the straight, he finished on too well for the mare, and won by a head. Dorak's only previous race was at Marton as a two-year-old eighteen months ago, after which he injured a foot, ana he was only recently returned to training. He is an AustralianIbred gelding by Doric, and he was secured at the Sydney sales by George for his patron, Mr. R. Stewart, of Wellington. With more than usual strength he may go on to much better deeds. Daregain once again had every chance, and Batsham, who was having only his second race, finished on best of the others for third. Telamon, after an early check, was also running on, and Whakarara went a promising race for a first start. Gaylord, after being third to the straight, failed to come on, but he appeared to be troubled by the turns. FAVOURITE'S JUVENILE. Pen justified the support that sent him out favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, but he was possibly lucky to beat Sir Crusoe. Beginning well, he was within easy range of the front throughout, and he then finished on solidly to score by a length. This was his first success in half a dozen starts, but he has shown promise in most of his races. He is a member of the successful Equitas family, being a bay colt by Acre out of the Absurd-Oratress mare Windbag, a half-sister to Oratrix and Concentrate, and he was secured by his owner-trainer, H. E. Russell, as a yearling for 150 guineas. Sir Crusoe was slow away, and when he moved he was always wide out on the track, so that he was possibly a good thing beaten. Endorsement took charge from Sceptre in the straight, but tired near the finish, and just lost second place. Sceptre, a daughter of Bulandshar, rah a much-improved race out ih front to the straight. Counter Lunch was, finishing on fourth, just beating Sceptre' for the barren honour.' Lady Drake, as well as Sir Crusoe, missed the jump. DOUBLE FOR JEANNE. Jeanne was awarded her second victory at the meeting in the Greytown Hack Handicap. Starting from the rail position, she elected to make every post a winner again, and, though Sigurd appeared to have caught her some distance from the post, she was hanging out on the track and the angle deceived. Sigurd was unlucky, as fie was squeezed back in the first furlong and then had to be hard ridden to retrieve lost ground. Even then he probably missed the verdict only because his rider, as well as the public, was deceived by the angle, Anderson parking the whip fifty yards from the post. Great Flight, indifferently handled, was a poor third, ahead of Mother-in-Law, Dancing Flame, and Gay Hunting. Just after passing the- half-mile Golden Flame fell and brought down Happy Heels. At a subsequent inquiry the blame was attached to Gay Hunting's running in too sharply, and this horse's rider, D. Lamb, was suspended for one month. ANOTHER DOUBLE. Another double was recorded when Hinerawe outstayed her five opponents in the Moroa Hack Handicap. Taken along quietly, she was last rounding to the straight, but she was moving through with her claim making the home stretch and she had the race won inside the last hundred yards. She is another member of the Equitas family. Last season it was intended to retire her to the stud, but she did so well while waiting in the paddock that she was put back into training, and she has now developed into a mare of handsome appearance, even if still a bit light fleshed. Larwood, who followed Sunbeam to the straight, was a clear second, with Earl Colossus, who had to wait for a chance to come off the fence, doing better than Sunbeam for the other share of the stake. Mendelssohn, who has not done well on the trip, stopped badly after going over a lot of ground. REPEAT BY EXPORT. Export was the third double winner in succession at the meeting, and he was at a surprisingly good price. After being first out from the rail position he allowed Counterblast and 4 Mister Quex to pass him, while Phalanx ran up on his outer, but once landed in the straight he came up facilely to challenge Counterblast, whom he beat home by a length. Export stripped looking a picture at the meeting and he should enjoy further success during the next few months. Counterblast hung on for second but she had no chance with the winner. Silver River finished on among the others for third. Phalanx was made a lot of use of and tired into fourth. Roaming and Alunga were best of the remainder. Accomplice went up fast on the turn but ran off the course. TREBLE FOR JEANNE. Jeanne came out again in the Electric Hack Handicap, and again she led all the way. She was favoured by moving in to the start, which was valuable service after drawing the outside marble, and that good start made victory comparatively easy for her. She was rehandicapped ordy 51b. which is

only halt the penalty she might reasonably have been given. This Lackham filly thus won three races in as many starts at the meeting. Daregain failed to make full use of the rail draw, but she went through early to third and came on well in the straight to. reduce the winner's margin to a length and a half. Rowana, slow away, was running on third, with Beauly and Acrobat next. Royal Portrait, who was with Jeanne on the turn, faded over the last furlong.
