BOWLING

CHRISTMAS FOURS

THE CLOSING ROUNDS

Play in the post-section stage of the Wellington Centre's. Christmas fours tourney on the Wellington green yesterday resulted as follows: — Second Round— Feilding (Hataitai) 17, Porteous 16; Skoglund (Wellington) 22, McWhannell (Hataitai) 21; Goldfinch (Wellington) 21, Reid (Kelburn) 18; Naylor (Thorndon) 21, J. R. Smith (Kelburn) 16.

Semi-final.—Goldfinch 24, Feilding 18; Skoglund 24, Naylor 14. McWhannell (Hataitai), wlien playing Skoglund (Wellington) was dogged by bad luck, especially in the first part of the game, the other side materially benefiting by fortunate wicks. McWhannell was down 13-2 and 17-6 but pulled up, and was only one short in the last end. . ' Porteous (Wellington), who played Feilding (Hataitai), just missed being the third Wellington skip to reach the semi-final, his nearest bowl in the. last end being a sixteenth of an inch short of counting as the winning shot. The Naylor (thorndon)-J. R. Smith (Kelburn) game was marked by a number of fine heads, in one of which ten bowls were closely • clustered around the kitty. Play in the semi-final games resulted in two Wellington Club" rinks skipped by L. Goldfinch and T. T. Skoglund being left in the final. The club last won the tournament fifteen years ago with R. Houldsworth, E. A. Liddle, H. G. Smith, and J. Fairway (s).

Naylor was 6-3 on the fourth end against Skoglund and was held to that score for six ends whilst his opponent added 13 to his total (16-6). Skoglund kept forging ah cad and decisively won by 24-14, with one end unplayed. The Wellington four played consistently, the two Skoglunds at times giving a brilliant exhibition.

'Goldfinch kept in front against Feilding right through, being 14-4, then 20-7, and finally 24-18. He had an anxious moment in the eighteenth end when leading 22-17. He was six down on the head when he played his first bowl, which carried the kitty to give him three shots, a difference of nine. Feilding, however, got into first place.
